Certified Teacher, Experienced Tutor, Homeschooling Support for K-12 Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, English, French, Arts, Health, Humanities IN-HOME AND ONLINE IN VANCOUVER BC

Hi, I’m Ian.

My hobbies include gardening, collecting records, playing guitar, and chess. I live in Vancouver with a "flame-point" Siamese cat named Jude, and my amazing partner who is an assistant professor at UBC.

I hold a master's degree in philosophy, and I am a certified teacher, having completed the Master's of Teaching program at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), where I specialized in primary/junior education, and also completed an additional basic qualification in intermediate mathematics (up to grade 10).

I specialize in teaching mathematics, but my background in the humanities, and my 20+ years of tutoring experience, means I enjoy teaching all subjects and exploring the connections between them. I tend to emphasize critical thinking, and draw my principal pedagogical inspiration from the Philosophy for Children movement.

I have worked with children and students, in one capacity or another, my entire adult life. Before recently returning to Vancouver, I worked as a teacher in the Toronto District School Board and as a tutor with The Tutor Group. I have been Head Theatre Instructor and Canoe Trip Director at Camp Nominingue, and I have helped to plan and run programming for ThinkFun Camp.

I also taught for over five years at the Vancouver Learning Centre, where I was fortunate to learn from psychologists about psychoeducational assessment, neuro-rehabilitation, and cognitive behavioural therapy. Following this I worked as a teaching assistant at the Bella Bella Community School, supporting children of Heiltsuk Nation and participating in the S.E.A.S. program, which integrates science curriculum and traditional Indigenous knowledge through land-based lessons and projects. This fit my passion for outdoor education and stimulated my continued interest in decolonization, the integration of Indigenous perspectives into the public school curriculum, and education for reconciliation.
